In the heart of the Jerónimos district, a neighborhood established at the end of the 19th century as an expression of Madrid’s most cultured and institutional side, Antonio Maura 4 is a significant testament to early 20th-century architecture. Designed in 1905 by the Basque architect Cesáreo Iradier Uriarte, the building embodies the style of its creator, a key figure in Madrid’s modernization. Son of the architect Pantaleón Iradier and relative of the politician Eduardo Dato e Iradier, he trained at the Madrid School of Architecture, where he initially absorbed the late 19th-century academic culture, based on rigorous composition, symmetry, and the use of solid and durable materials. His professional career was later enriched by influences from Central and Northern Europe, particularly from the era of German and Belgian eclecticism, which introduced floral motifs, construction innovations, and a more refined attention to artisanal details.
The result was a personal style that combined compositional sobriety with decorative elegance, featuring a measured use of ornamentation and great attention to the quality of materials. Iradier favored exposed brick, local stone, wrought iron, and decorations inspired by naturalism—elements interpreted with balance and never in excess. Iradier carried out most of his work in the capital, while in his native Vitoria he left few but significant works, including the Teatro Principal, an example of Neo-Baroque eclecticism with a reinforced concrete structure. His production ranges from the Neo-Basque regionalism of the villa, today the Pedro Anitua Foundation, to refined Modernism, as seen in the pedestal of the Dato monument. This linguistic variety finds a harmonious synthesis in Antonio Maura 4: exposed brick, Colmenar granite, and floral motifs express a balance between constructive solidity and decorative delicacy, in dialogue with the fabric of the Jerónimos district.
